Living With PPPD: Exploring Gentle Yoga and Nervous System Support
A personalized approach to mindful movement, rest, and body awareness.
When you're experiencing persistent dizziness, unsteadiness, or sensitivity to movement, even everyday activities can start to feel overwhelming. Something as simple as walking through a busy store, changing positions, or navigating a visually stimulating environment may require more energy than it once did.
For people living with Persistent Postural-Perceptual Dizziness (PPPD), these experiences can become part of everyday life.
And while managing PPPD often involves specialized medical care, having opportunities to reconnect with your body in a supportive, intentional environment may be a meaningful addition to your wellness routine.
What is PPPD?
Persistent Postural-Perceptual Dizziness, commonly called PPPD, is a chronic vestibular disorder characterized by ongoing dizziness, unsteadiness, or sensations of rocking and swaying.
Unlike traditional spinning vertigo, PPPD may feel more like being off-balance, floating, or moving even when you're standing still.
Symptoms often become more noticeable with upright posture, movement, or visually busy environments. PPPD can develop following a vestibular condition, illness, or other event that disrupts the body's sense of balance.
Although the symptoms can be difficult to explain, PPPD is a recognized medical condition that can significantly affect daily life.
Where does the nervous system come in?
Our ability to feel balanced and oriented relies on communication between the brain, inner ear, eyes, and other sensory systems throughout the body.
With PPPD, the brain's processing of movement and spatial information can become altered, sometimes contributing to increased sensitivity to movement and visual stimulation.
Living with unpredictable dizziness can also be stressful. Some people begin feeling apprehensive about movement or avoiding activities that previously felt comfortable.
Nervous system regulation practices such as gentle breathing, relaxation, and body awareness may offer opportunities to manage stress and develop a more comfortable relationship with movement.
These practices are not a replacement for vestibular rehabilitation or medical treatment, but they may provide complementary support.
A different approach to yoga
At Neutral Moon Studio, we understand that wellness is not one-size-fits-all.
Our private wellness sessions are designed around the individual, rather than asking every client to follow the same sequence, pace, or physical expectations.
For someone navigating PPPD or movement sensitivity, that might mean exploring:
Gentle, supported yoga postures
Slow, intentional transitions between positions
Seated or floor-based movement when appropriate
Comfortable, unforced breathing exercises
Rest and relaxation practices
Mindful body awareness
A quiet, low-stimulation environment with opportunities to pause
Each session is adapted to the client's comfort level, movement abilities, and wellness goals, with an emphasis on choice, communication, and accessibility.
Because PPPD affects people differently, we also encourage clients to discuss movement-based wellness activities with their treating healthcare provider.
Wellness doesn't have to mean pushing harder
Sometimes the most meaningful part of a wellness practice is having space to move at your own pace.
There is no expectation to keep up with a class, perform a particular pose, or move beyond what feels manageable.
Our approach to private wellness is rooted in creating an environment where clients can explore mindful movement and rest without the pressure of a traditional group class.
For individuals managing ongoing symptoms or rebuilding comfort with physical activity, that individualized attention can make the experience feel more approachable.
